Reading your bible so that you "Grow in Jesus and Share his love!"

Have you ever read your bible and then got up and realised that you didn't remember what you just read? You are not alone! Many people have a lot of trouble retaining and applying what they read in the bible.

Try using SOAP

An acronym for a method that some people find useful in helping them retain and learn from their bible reading. This method requires a bible and a journal.

Scripture: On four different days of each week, read one of the set readings for the following Sunday. When a particular verse, phrase or word catches your attention, write it down in the journal (no more than two verses).

Observation: what is taking place in the reading? What is the main point of the verse? What thoughts come from the reading?

Application: God doesn't speak to just increase your information about him, he speaks to transform you. God wants your life to grow. Write your thoughts down. What might God be saying to you through this verse? how might you change your behaviour as a result of what you just read?

Prayer: write a prayer responding to God's word, as if you are writing God a letter, telling him how you feel and what you think, and ask God to help you apply it to your life.
